The Order of Carol I was established on May 10, 1906 by Carol I of Romania to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his reign. Until the end of the Romanian monarchy in Abolition of the Romanian monarchy (1947), this order represented the highest decoration awarded by the King of Romania.
